The Renewal was the final outcome of my DES223: Game Design Paper. This was a group project I worked on with Melody Elwood, and Rikka Ly. All three of us contributed to the Game’s mechanics, themes and specific play patterns. All the graphics were drawn or created by Rikka.

The Renewal started as a way to teach students aged 14+ the beginnings of how voting, and government process can work. It is set in a post-apocalyptic future, where resources are scarce and life is tough. Players take on the role of a specific faction or group within “the community” and try to manage and control their resources while preparing for an upcoming catastrophic event. The different needs and wants of each faction make players butt heads and try to work out compromises, and event cards throw spanners in the works of the groups effort to uplift their fragile community.

It was inspired by games such as Kings Dilemma by Hjalmar Hach and Lorenzo Silva, The Quiet Year by Joe Mcdaldno, and Microscope the RPG by Ben Robbins.
