One of my University Projects involved looking at local makers and creators, and waste ‘streams’ in my local area, and using that research as inspiration for how I could recycle items that could be considered “junk” into new and fresh things.
I was lucky enough to find some old electric guitar parts as part of my explorations, and used the rest of the scrap I had found to build a fully-functional guitar.
This is a hand-wound homemade pickup I made out of a beer crate, 5 magnets, 5 nails, and some copper wire.
Here I attached it to a small pre-amp circuit to boost the output of it, and stretched a single guitar string over the top to test if it would work properly.
Once I got it working, I moved on to building the body and neck of the guitar.
Here I planed and attached some scrap wood together, then routed out pockets for the neck, electronics and for the pickup.
